CBD for Crossfit Athletes

Tayla Howe Strength in Depth

CrossFit is a lifestyle characterised by safe, effective exercise and calculated nutrition, not to mention an incredibly tight and supportive community. CrossFit can be used to accomplish every goal, from improved health to weight loss to better performance. As with any sport CrossFit requires you to push yourself to the absolute limit in order to grow stronger and better. With such a demanding sport both physically and mentally, it is more important than ever to give your body the very best in nutrition.

Supplements are common to most athletes especially CrossFit athletes. CrossFit is an extremely challenging sport, requiring a more rounded approach to health, fitness and nutrition. In recent years the supplements market has a new game changer, CBD. CBD has a range of unique and helpful benefits, which are more holistic and naturally productive, because nature knows best! CBD is a compound extracted from the Cannabis Sativa plant that offers a range of benefits such as:

  • Anti-inflammation
  • Combat oxidative damage
  • Enhances blood flow
  • Pain relief
  • Improved sleep

CBD is naturally extremely low in THC, and therefore will not give the ‘high’ effect that is associated heavily with Cannabis. The legal limit of THC within CBD oil is 0.2%, however for athletes or people who are regularly drug tested it is recommended that they consume CBD oil with 0% THC. Broad Spectrum is the best option for athletes, as this type of CBD contains no THC and therefore is safest for regular testing.

Recovery Speed

A work out puts a lot of stress on your body, you tear and break up muscle fibre every time which reforms to create stronger muscle. A hard and challenging work out, will ultimately strengthen your muscles, but that doesn’t mean it won’t ache along the way! CBD oil has been suggested to help with not only reducing pain experienced, but also promoting energy levels and aiding against fatigue both mentally and physically.

One of the biggest uses of CBD is for improved sleep. Sleep is an incredibly overlooked aspect of life, poor sleep can be linked to depression, lowered productivity, lowered attention and poor athletic performance. Sleep ultimately can determine your mental state and ability to perform. In order for athletes to thrive under pressure they need to reach a challenge state, which is a positive space optimal for success. CBD has the ability to reduce anxiety, which can be helpful in reducing sleep difficulties and improving sleep quality. CBD may increase overall length of sleep, and improve insomnia, according to research.

CBD has high levels of antioxidants which helps to reduce inflammation around joints. Inflammation of joints can occur from conditions such as Arthritis, this is often painful and reduces the mobility of the joints. CBD directly balances the endocannabinoid system within the brain which can then enhance chemicals within the brain, this allows the perception of pain within the body to be reduced.

CBD for CrossFitters

The emergence of CBD could mark a major turning point in how athletes recover from training stress and manage both occasional and chronic pain. There is still a large amount of research required to unmask the full potential of CBD oil, especially for athletes. Although it is not a banned substance for athletes in or out of competition, the potential risk for athletes is if the product you buy doesn’t contain what it says on the label. Do not let this put you off! There are plenty of reputable CBD suppliers, and anyone worth buying from will be more than happy to supply you with their lab test reports! With what we know at this point, CBD offers good potential benefits and few risks. If it improves recovery as a pain reliever, anti-inflammatory, and sleep aid, then it has great potential to improve athletic performance.
